The Third Teacher

In progressive movements such as the Reggio Emilia approach, the learning environment is often referred to as the child’s ‘third teacher’, such is the importance given to the physical surroundings.

Space is used to encourage collaboration and exploration and the importance of order is emphasised. Every material is evaluated in terms of fitness-for-use and teachers will set them out deliberately to provoke interest and experimentation from the child.
